Life in the Cook Islands

Ewan Francis Smith

Ewan has spent his working life in the airline industry as a pilot, engineer, and as Managing Director of the Cook Islands domestic airline which he founded in 1978. Flying early mornings and evenings provided the opportunity to develop his knowledge of aerial photography. Some of his early high altitude images of the Cook Islands have become icons of Cook Islands tourism and played a significant part in attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors.

In 1998 his publishing company Island Image produced a large format coffee table book The Cook Islands which graces many homes of Cook Islands residents along with visitors from around the World.

Smith spent many years looking through superb Zeiss lenses of a Hasselblad 2000 FCW medium format system using Ektachrome transparency film before making the transition to digital and his current outfit based on the Nikon D850. The transition was not an easy one he says, "You have to resist the temptation of endless post manipulation of images that negate the art of photography and replace it with illustrations".

Current work in progress includes a revamped version of The Cook Islands - Postscript Edition along with Aitutaki of the South Seas and a collaboration with well-known artist Judith Kunzle entitled Cook Islands Dance
